solar @ Blackheath Pool
Friends of Blackheath Pool & Memorial Park has recently applied to the 2016 of SUEZ Community Grants for initial funding to begin a project to bring solar energy to Blackheath Pool.
SUEZ grants byline is "creating a sustainable future".
Our end goal is to render Blackheath Pool complex completely energy self-sufficient.
Our application seeks to fund a preliminary feasibility study.
With recent advances in solar technology, both increasing efficiency of energy conversion, and reduction in cost & size of solar collectors, we hope to be able to find a suitable solution.
We made mention not only of heating of Pool swimming water, but also the electrical power used by the filtration plant & circulation system. The second being by far the greatest cost barrier to keeping The Pool open for longer seasons.
Blackheath Area Neighbourhood Centre (BANC) kindly agreed to auspice our application, which made the whole process much smoother.
We also received a very supportive letter from Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle.
BMCC's Blue Mountains Leisure Centres management - who run all our pools - have also been very supportive when the topic has been discussed. And the incoming Rhododendron Festival Committee has also expressed support.
We'll keep you posted on developments.

water's warmer than you think
It's NOT COLD.
It's always warmer than Bondi surf in summer.
This is an unexpected consequence of the new smaller half-Olympic lap pool - which replaced the former, much bigger full Olympic – it’s shorter by half & shallower.
Smaller body of water warms faster & retains warmth.

[achievement #1] pleasant swimming water
The lap pool averages 23C throughout the season.
It is the only unheated outdoor pool in the mountains; it’s also in the coolest climate zone, yet the lap pool peaked at 29C on 1 February 2011!
The Pool *costs nothing* to heat, it is heated entirely by the sun.
In our new carbon-priced world could we ask for better efficiency?
This was achieved despite a very cool, wet summer.
As stated on ABC Radio in January 2011
“...this is the strongest La Nina ever recorded”*.
In the upper mountains December 2010 was the wettest in 15 years,
and the trend continued across the season:
19 rain days in January,
16 rain days in February,
22 rain days in March.

crowds flock to Pool for OzDay
The Pool was a popular spot yesterday. Mid afternoon air temps topped 33C. Patronage averaged 150 at any one time across the whole day. What a successful Australia Day! Former generations of proud Blackheathen Australians - who built The Pool - will be smiling on us ;)

Spotless Record [letter to BMG]
.gif)
Dear Sir,
It’s with some sadness we read of assertions that our beautiful pool is tainted! (SMH Saturday 28 Feb 09)
Blackheath Pool has a spotless health record.
The pool had a brand new filtration system installed just three years ago. Visitors remark on the crystalline quality of the water. We swim there each day, and have done since mid-November with no ill effects!
So we want to reassure visitors that all’s well at Blackheath Pool & the water has maintained a very pleasant temperature – not dipping below 23⁰C for most of the season.
Regards,
Simon Hare & Jennifer Kelly on behalf of Friends of Blackheath Pool & Memorial Park.

Lifeguards
This morning I introduced myself (as rep of FoBp&MP) to lifeguard Reece. Reece will be rostered casually at Blackheath. [Other lifeguards are both named Rebecca]
Reece said Pool temperature at 11AM today was 25.9C - as warm as outdoor pools at Katoomba & Lawson. Both are artificially heated to maintain a constant 26C temperature.
